World War Two history

Like the rest of the UK, Dumfries and Galloway had its part to play during World War II, particularly when it came to both naval and airborne operations and the defence of Atlantic and Irish Sea coastline in the area.
A major example of this wartime role can be found at Kirkcolm, where the concrete standings and taxiways of RAF Wig Bay (also known as RAF Stranraer) can still be seen on the shore of Loch Ryan just outside the village.
